Jana Slyder - CF Games Champ (50-54) 2019

Updated: Oct 14, 2019

It was Jana Slyder's first year in the 50-54 year age group where she placed 1st 🥇 in 2019. Jana has been doing CrossFit for 7 years, but has only competed for the last 3 years. She has 4 kids, works and her husband Matt is in the Army.

Here is a bit about Jana 😊⬇️

.

ATHLETIC BACKGROUND:

Jana mostly trained in track 🏃‍♀️ from the age of 10 and whilst also competing at basketball and Volleyball at high school, she continued to pursue her track career after finishing school. She completed the Chicago Marathon 3 times and still holds records at her school (that is impressive 👏🏻👏🏻)

.

TRAINING REGIME AND WORK/LIFE BALANCE

Jana train 5 days a week, usually for 2 hours a day. During peak weeks, she may train twice a day. Jana is careful with recovery and carefully plans her nutrition. Bring an army wife means her and her husband plan each week thoroughly (to cope with their busy schedules) and as such achieve a good balance with work, family and training. They are an active family and spend as much time as they can outdoors being active.

HARDEST PART OF THE CF GAMES:

Jana said the hardest part was driving her mind, body and spirit to perform long after it wanted to stop. On day 2, after workout 4, which was a 6000 km (4-mile) weighted ruck sack race (she finished in 35:37 mins in 1st place), her body reached exhaustion and started to physically shut down. The medics rushed her to an ice bath. She was incredibly dehydrated, overheated, fatigued. She said “That was the defining moment in the competition where I had reached my threshold, but I had to force myself to move beyond my comfort zone”. In a very critical moment, her husband said straight-forward, “You need to Ranger up and win this.” That drove her…and she won 😆👏🏻🥇

.

ADVICE ON REACHING GOALS:

“Life can be simple. Focus on what’s most important and give it the time it deserves. Find your passion, identify your reason “why", and don't stop until you make yourself proud!”
